Anastasia State Park Bicycle Eco Tour
This is an exquisite adventure and one of St Augustine’s natural treasures. The tour begins at the St Augustine Lighthouse Park located adjacent to the St Augustine Lighthouse at 442 Ocean Vista Ave. St Augustine Fl. 32080 (for google maps). Here you will be introduced to you guide and they will fit you with a bicycle and a (optional) helmet as you began you journey all the way across the street to the St Augustine Lighthouse, where you will learn some history of the light as well as some interesting paranormal activity that some say still haunt to this day.
Then on to the Anastasia State Park, were the alligator farm was once located and called South Beach Alligator Farm. We will make a quick stop at the coquina quarry were the material came to build St Augustine and the Castillo de San Marcos or the Old Fort. Very cool history here seen from the origin. Learn how they managed moving these massive rock formations across the water to put together piece by piece by man power, wagon and raft. Amazing!
Then off again to the Beautiful Salt Run Trail were we will peddle alongside the original St Augustine Inlet, the Salt Run. Dolphins, Manatees, Stingrays, Sea Turtles as well as all types of Marsh Birds including Ospreys, The Great Blue Heron, Wood Storks, Rosetta Spoon Bills Egrets and many more call home. The Salt Run is a master piece in itself and a very important natural resource for the area plant and wildlife.
Off again as we bicycle to the walk over across the marsh to the beach. Here we will point out some of the very delicate plant life that protects or coast line and the wonderful birds of the marsh and shore birds that migrate and live here. We love our park and our white sandy beaches with no vehicular traffic. The Loggerhead, Green and Leatherback Sea Turtles love to nest here. They come back every year, to lay their eggs.
Onward and forward to the nature trails where local plant life is abundant. Our guides will explain the importance of the vegetation and some of the land critters that live here.
Then off to the Spanish ruins of fireplace and well. All that remains of what was probably a Spanish barracks which housed the master masons and the stone cutter that built the fort. The huge blocks of coquina were transported by wagon, then by raft to build a Spanish Fort that has never been conquered.
Making our way back to the Lighthouse Park, we will make another quick stop at the fishing area just to see if any fisherman have had any luck and check out maybe one last chance to see a Dolphin or two before heading back to the Lighthouse Park.
